Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Dave Campbell moved to Victoria at 13, where his passion for running quickly took root. A standout in high school track and field, he broke the four-minute barrier in the 1500m in his first year and trained under coach Stan Gill, who fostered his drive for excellence. Competing for both the University of Victoria Vikes and the Victoria Mercuries, Dave became one of Canada’s top middle-distance runners, setting personal bests from 800m to 10,000m and earning a place on the national team.

On the international stage, Dave represented Canada at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the 1500m, winning medals at the 1986 Commonwealth Games (Bronze, 1500m) and 1989 Francophone Games (Gold). His career highlights include victories at the 1987 Indoor Grand Prix and 1990 Vancouver Sun Run, as well as strong showings at World Cups and Pan American Games. Named Victoria’s Athlete of the Year in 1986, he remains a celebrated figure in Canadian athletics.
