2008 Inductees Announced

The Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame 15th annual Induction Ceremony and Dinner will be on October 18 at the Save-On Foods Memorial Centre. This year’s inductees include:


The Canadian 1913 Davis Cup Team of which all four members came from the Victoria Lawn tennis club founded in 1885.


Gordon Hartley, a Victoria High School teacher, who was keen on athletics and fitness. He organized and coached summer tennis schools for more than 30 years and introduced over 35,000 people to the sport.


Dave Cooper, “The Flying Plumber”, began driving in the 1940’s at the Langford oval and then continued to race at the new Western Speedway as well as up and down the west coast until 1974.


Don Burgess is recognized for almost half a century dedicated to the sport of rugby as both a player and coach. He was involved at every level from local school teams to the Canadian National team.


Brian Robinson stepped up the soccer ladder with winning teams from the juvenile leagues to Canada’s national team and the professional Vancouver Whitecaps. Along the way he collected silverware with Lansdowne and Vic High, Vic West, Victoria United and Victoria’s first Dominion Cup with the 1975 London Boxing club.


Maplettes-Rawlings-Home Lumber Women’s Basketball Team won the Canadian Sr ‘A’ Ladies Championship three times during a five-year term in the 1960’s.


Howard Tooby loved, followed and played Victoria sports in the “do it yourself years” of the depression and 2nd World War. However he didn’t only do it for himself, as he was a helping hand and organizer as well. Participating mainly in youth to Sr. ‘A’ basketball as well as organizing and coaching in the Oak Bay Parks tennis programme.


Lori Bowden is a three-time Triathlete of the Year who races mainly in the Ironman events where she swims, cycles and runs against the world’s best. In 23 Ironman races she finished first 12 times and since her first victory in 1997 she has collected two World Ironman Championships.
