There are far too many documents, old photos and sports artifacts in the collection of the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame (GVSHOF) to display them all in one place. That's where the digital age comes into play. With the launch of our website, local sports fans and those around the world gain access to information on every individual and team inducted in to the GVSHOF. There are even tantalizing views of old equipment and photos that are currently in storage.
The website development and proposed move to the Victoria Multiplex Arena represent huge undertakings for a small group of volunteers who have carried the torch for a long time noted Nick Tuele, referring to the handful of folks who have been documenting sports history and publicly recognizing inductees since 1993.
A relative newcomer to the Hall's volunteer base, Tuele spearheaded the web project with the services of Saanich-based Zero One Design. He is also taking the lead in engineering the exhibits and graphics for the GVSHOF presence in the new Multiplex. "It's a big challenge and a big step," Tuele said.
GVSHOF archivist, Dave Unwin, commented on the possibilities for the new exhibits and is excited with the opportunity to bring aspects of his ongoing research to the public’s attention. Since the beginning, Unwin has had the enjoyable, yet time consuming job, of researching potential inductees for the GVSHOF as well as digging up fascinating chapters of sports history to include in displays. Recently he has been scanning photographs and newspaper articles as the GVSHOF prepares for its next steps.
Further developments are expected in the near future as the Multiplex Arena begins to emerge on Blanshard Street.
