Doug Day (1995)
Doug Day spent more than 40 years working for the betterment of
local soccer since his arrival in Victoria in 1948. He helped many
youngsters learn the game of soccer first as a volunteer with the
Victoria Soccer School program and then with the Gordon Head Soccer
Association. He became president of the latter and then served
eight years as president of the Lower Island Juvenile Soccer
Association. Doug went on as a leader in the expanding Victoria
& District Senior Soccer League and served as president through
the 1970's. Changeover to the Vancouver Island Soccer League and
Victoria's first successes at the national championships. During
the 80's he held various V .I.S.L. executive positions before
stepping down. But in 1992 he was back helping the fledgling
Vancouver Island Woman's Soccer Association get established. Doug
Day represented soccer on The Victoria Sports Council in 1968 when
they organized the first Victoria Sports Celebrity Dinner and
worked with that organization for 25 years. For his untiring
dedication to soccer he was rewarded as Victoria's1973 sportsman of
the Year. Since then the Gordon Head Soccer Association have
honoured him by naming one of their fields after him and in 1995
the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame selected him as one of the
first inducted into their Builder category.
