As we look back at the 1980’s we remember the huge impact that the stories of Terry Fox and Rick Hansen had on us. Easy to remember, too, was the disillusionment when Canadian Ben Johnson tested positive for steroids at the 1988 Olympics. Locally and on a positive note, we saw the incredible accomplishments of Debbie Scott-Bowker, as she became one of the greatest female middle-distance runners in Canadian cross-country, road and track racing history. Debbie dominated in her events and her highlights include a gold medal at the 1985 world indoor track and field championships in Paris.
