In 1931 Torchy Peden set the world record in the 1-mile bike race and in 1934 was named the world - champion long-distance bike racer. The decade saw the powerhouse Blue Ribbons Basketball team come into their own and they won the 1932 / 1933 Canadian Basketball Championship. They repeated in 1934 / 1935 and as the “Dominoes” did it again in 1938 / 1939. Murray "Muzz" Patrick won the 1936 Canadian amateur heavyweight boxing title. This same year Victoria athletes did well at the Berlin Olympics with Bruce Humber racing the great Jesse Owens. Archie McKinnon was the Canadian Olympic track coach and both Art and Chuck Chapman and Doug Peden won Olympic silver in basketball.
